Product Description

In Norse mythology, Idun was the goddess of fertility and was responsible for guarding the apples that ensured the eternal youth of the gods. For many, she was also a symbol of love and rebirth, and in a famous poem she was referred to as the lover of the gods (ása leika). Unlike the previous models of knives in the Northern Lights series , the NL5 is a little rounder and softer and therefore an excellent choice as a hunting knife. The straight, generous leather handle offers total control over the powerful VG10 laminate blade. The NL5L is as attractive as it is effective, especially in the hands of the experienced hunter.

When it comes to the Northern Light series, nothing has been spared to make this knife as strong, beautiful and comfortable as possible. The knife is a pleasure to look at and a thrill to use. The rolled blade is forged with a VG10W steel cutting edge to which we add tungsten (W). In general, the addition of tungsten means that the edge becomes substantially more solid and maintains sharpness better, at least that’s what our own tests have shown. And the sides are made of fully stainless and resistant 420J2 steel.

This excellent combination of metals brings together all conceivable and desirable knife properties, including resilience, torque resistance and edge durability, all in a single blade. The 5 mm thick blade itself is strong enough for all reasonable tasks, but with laminate technology you can expect an additional 20% strength in the form of bending resistance compared to an unlaminated VG10 blade. The beautiful handle consists of specially selected ox leather which provides a secure and robust grip. It ages elegantly and acquires an attractive brown patina over the years. The handle is unaffected by oil and solvents and is impervious to water. When the ox hide dries out, small cracks may appear on the handle, but these disappear when the knife is used again.

We at Fallkniven believe that the convex edge is the best combination of cutting performance and edge strength. Anyone who knows anything about knife making knows that this type of edge can only be made by hand, which is why 99.99% of all knives do not have this type of edge. Machines play an important role in the way knives are made, and robots and CNC (computer numerically controlled) grinding machines shape the blades in the best possible way. The machines are loaded with stacks of blanks so that production can run 24 hours a day and the result is often very good. Well, good for the price anyway.

However, if you want superior drawer strength, tremendous corrosion resistance, edge durability and custom design, no machine can come close to handcrafting. We are therefore very proud to present our Northern Light series, although we know that only the most quality-conscious knife user will appreciate its features. Each knife in the Northern Lights series comes with a high-quality black leather sheath.
